The Madrid running of the bulls – Strictly not for tourists

San Sebastian de los Reyes, the satellite town that slowly orbits Madrid like a crazy exo-planet for party-going Spaniards hell bent on self destruction, hosts its own version of the running of the bulls; a strictly locals only event. This is Pamps without the crap. This is a Spanish-only good old-fashioned 5 day drinking session, with loud music, general street rioting and plenty of very amateur bull running.

When we enquired about going we were told: “no no, tourists can not go here, it’s too dangerous”. Whilst this isn’t massively the case, the fact that it is mostly people from the pueblo probably means that there is a higher tendency for ‘situations’ to arise. The running is probably less organized and there is more of a chance of getting trampled by an agitated cow. If you’re at the front you should be fine though and alternatively, just hang out in the sides and watch them thunder past.

Running commences around 8 am after a night of gloriously heavy boozing and terminates majestically in the shabby bullring in the center of town. This is where all the steaming Spaniards have a shot at drunken matador stardom. Injuries are inevitable.

When we went, there was the usual town riot before the running; plenty of car burning and the raiding of a doomed ice cream van for mob ice pops. All in true Spanish style. That said, the people were generally friendly. You’ll be fine, just go aware that this isn’t Pamplona.

SBT says dine on: Bocadillos when and where you can.
SBT says wine on: BYOB (Bring your own booze).

Come here if: You’re hell bent on booze, risk, and España
