Plaza Del Sol – Hanging out in Gracia

If you’re feeling disillusioned with the tourist minefield in the center of Barca and you want to escape the heaving mass of camera slingers and sightseer’s get to Plaza Del Sol in Gracia. You may even want to brave the long walk from the old town up to Parc Guell or vice versa. In which case, stop here for a chill and perhaps just cut the walk short and stick around here for the afternoon.

This is where chilled groups of young Catalans come to sit and smoke Moroccan Hash and drink cans of beer while they catch up with life

This is where chilled groups of young Catalans come to sit and smoke Moroccan Hash and drink cans of beer while they catch up with life. Everyone is friendly and happy so you could well finish up hanging out with a whole bunch of new, welcoming faces.

On the whole its nice here because most tourists just can’t be bothered to walk the 20 minutes up from Plaza Catalunya or delve into the depths of the sweaty metro to take 4 stops up here. The walk will take you past some cool Gaudi architecture though including Casa Battló and Casa milá.

If sitting around on the ground drinking beer from a can isn’t your type of thing, come anyway and take your pick of any of the traditional bars around the square. They are all pretty decent and have the same relaxed atmosphere.

Stripped Back rates Plaza Del Sol with the “Laid Back” award for secret spots to check out.

Come here if: Gaudi and Picasso are ganging up you and laughing at your brown sandals and white socks combo
Don’t come here if: You’re still hungry for tourism and ticking off the dreaded sightseeing boxes
When? Whenever! Yupi! Where? Plaça Del Sol08012 Barcelona, Spain
