Lo Maximo – Unpretentious Retro Chic in Madrid
The barrio of Lavapies is an absolute gold mine for quirky, off the wall bars that are well off the radar for most tourists. It is charming, colourful and rough around the edges. It also makes for great exploring.

If you do happen to go for a late evening stroll south of Sol, then head over to Lo Maximo for some cañas. During the 1950’s this was one of the most important bars in Madrid, proudly setting the trend with a brand new stainless-steel fit out that would go onto become the standard for 90% of the bars in Spain.
Like many of its time, Lo Maximo eventually faded from popularity and endured life as a drab haunt for 50-year-old boozers. That is until 5 years ago when the owners restored it to its former retro glory, and it is now the cool place to be once more.
At the rear of the petite bar there is a tiny stage set up like a 50’s era living room. The décor is magnificently shiny and old fashioned, but this, as always, is the sign of quality in Madrid.
The staff and the crowd that go there are down to earth, friendly and chilled out. The drinks are cheap. The tapas are pretty great too, especially when you realize just how drunk you are and need a re-fuel.
