La Vía Láctea – Into the Milky Way

This bar is cool. It’s cool because it’s the first bar that opened in the youth rebellion at the end of Franco’s regime. When Madrileños started partying hard. When rock and roll was a big culture. People lived to excess in drugs, sex and music. The classic scene that has been cinematized plenty of times. But, that’s how it was and this bar is where it all started for the city of Madrid.

Rock and roll classics ooze out of the speakers and everybody gets very drunk while they dance just like they did in the old days

It still is very rock and roll; the décor hasn’t changed since day one and the walls and ceilings are plastered with posters of the stars. Rock and roll classics ooze out of the speakers and everybody gets very drunk while they dance just like they did in the old days.

This is a great spot to come to en-route during a Saturday night Malasaña bar crawl. You probably wouldn’t want to spend the whole night here (although it often easily happens anyway), mainly because there are some other nice bars and clubs that are worth popping into the mixer as well.

If you’re lucky you will grab yourselves one of the chic old school booths to chill in with your gang. Then you can focus your attention on your getting your quiff well bryl-creamed and combed. Get that leather jacket collar nicely up and hone your moody rocker stare for luring in that ‘gal’ in the sweet polka dot doing the twist on the pool table. Oh yeah.

Come here if: Elvis isn’t dead to you, the twist is the only way you know how to dance
Don’t come here if: Drunk youth ain’t your bag or you’re a techno purist
When? Every day (weekends best) 2000 – 0300 Where? C/ De Velarde 18, 28004 Madrid
