Bodega Dos De Mayo – Great tapas, great prices

Handwritten alongside “classic tapas” in the SBT dictionary you will find a scrawly, ink stained, and blotchy note. It simply reads: Bodega dos de Mayo.

This isn’t fine dining, it is Spanish tapas at its very best. It isn’t table service, and it is bloody chaos, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the man cutting your jamon considers himself to be the absolute finest in the business.

This bodega must have seen some serious business over the years. You feel in the company of great explorers, of distinguished engineers, and only when you look in your leather pouch and find Euros do you remember it is the 21st century. The food is excellent and astonishingly cheap. And the beer and wine a worthy match.

The most effective way of ordering is to grunt across the bar, and in unison the camareros will bark back at you whether you speak Spanish or not. Have faith. Regardless of the hordes of people scrapping for attention, your food will appear and your appetite will be satisfied.

SBT says dine on: Bacalao croquetas, solomillo al whiskey, queso de cabra con guacamole, salmorejo, flamenquines, anything!
SBT says wine on: Cañas and house Rioja.
